The images above are an example of the versatility of VMWare workstation. VMWare workstation not only can boot and start an OS from a virtual image that was imported from another computer or created on the same desktop running VMWare but it also has the very nice capabilities of starting an installation from an ISO image.



In the case above, an installation for Vista begins from an ISO installation image. The desktop did not have a DVD drive installed and there was no external USB derivative available either. The ISO was actually run from a network drive to start the installation and completed without errors.

The trick is to create a new virtual machine through VMWare giving it the default settings and name. Then before starting the virtual machine, edit the devices and click on the option to browse for an ISO image. Click OK and start the virtual machine to start the installation.
